PDF Output with Other Applications

Quark XPress is not able to generate PDF files without Acrobat Distiller, but it does offer a convenient export feature available from the menu File --> Export --> Document as PDF. This command opens the Export to PDF dialog box which has an Options button. This brings the dialog box with PDF export options.

PDF export settings in Quark XPress 5.0

On the Hyperlinks tab, uncheck the Include Hyperlinks box, as hyperlinks are not required for printing. Controls on the Job Options tab override those in Acrobat Distiller. If you already have set the correct Distiller job options, then uncheck both of the Override Distiller's Font Options and Override Distiller Compression Options boxes. Otherwise, set both options the same as you would in the Distiller Job Options dialog box. In the Output tab, set the Type list to Composite and Print Colors to CMYK. If the layout is double-sided or has divider pages check the box Produce Blank Pages, otherwise leave it unchecked. Also uncheck the box Use OPI. Also, select Off in the Registration.

PDF export settings in PageMaker 6.5

PageMaker also uses Acrobat Distiller to PDF and has its own special export command. If PageMaker 6.5 is used, choose File --> Export --> Adobe PDF from the program menu. Then, a dialog box with multiple sections will be pre-sented. In the General section check the radio button Distill Now, then select Acrobat in the Printer Style list and Same as Current Publication in the Page Size(s) list. Then, type the necessary page range in Pages group. In the Formats and Fonts section, choose Acrobat 3.0 in the Compatibility list, then uncheck ASCII Format and Subset fonts below those boxes and check the Embed all fonts box. Set all controls in the Compression sections the same way as in the Acrobat Distiller Job Options dialog box. In the Color Model section, click the CMYK radio button and uncheck the Use EPS screen preview box. All other settings are not important for printing.
